Inflammation – The Fuel for What Ails You

Updated: 5 days ago

Inflammation is often talked about and not always completely understood. What exactly is it? What exactly does it cause? How can I best avoid inflammation? How can I heal from inflammation?

I absolutely get it. Like so many things that we are never taught about our health, wrapping your head around the effects of inflammation on the body is quite a task. Let’s take a first step to understanding more about inflammation.

What is inflammation?

It’s important to understand that inflammation is something we actually need to survive. Not all inflammation is bad, in fact, inflammation is an important natural process that takes place in the body. It is the body’s immune response to injury or infection. The body releases chemicals which trigger immune responses to heal damaged tissue or fight off infection. Sounds good, right? It is, but when inflammation becomes chronic, it is a surefire sign that something in the body has gone very wrong. Chronic inflammation actually breaks the body down, making you older and more frail.

The deterioration of the average person’s diet over the past few generations is key to understanding the modern epidemic of inflammatory diseases that we currently see in our society. Our typical diet in the West contains at least thirty times more pro-inflammatory nutrients than it did about 100 years ago. This provokes powerful and out-of-control inflammatory reactions that our bodies are now primed for, due to poor nutrition and a sick care system that does not address the root cause(s) of chronic inflammation.

What are inflammatory diseases?

When we think of inflammation, we think of tenderness, stiffness, pain, redness. Did you know that inflammation is intertwined in; Obesity, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Rhinitis, Asthma, Cardiovascular diseases, Arthritis (all types), Osteoarthritis, and Rheumatoid arthritis? It seems to play a part in everything that ails us.

How are we currently treating chronic inflammation?

Currently, people most often turn to over-the-counter or prescription drugs which may mask the symptoms, but do not address the underlying cause(s). Side effects from these drugs can also be very harmful, potentially causing a wide range of issues such as weight gain, severe stomach pain, bone deformities, and even heart failure.

Testing for inflammation

A high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) test measures general levels of inflammation in the body, and can be used to assess risk for heart disease and stroke in people not already affected by these diseases.

How can I avoid or heal from chronic inflammation?

You should definitely avoid or restrict alcohol, refined sugars and grains, saturated fats, and all hydrogenated oils.
